The short explanation of this alert was:

To the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael:

As community members living and working in our area, we are very concerned about the treatment of workers at O'Connor Woods. It has come to our attention that O'Connor Woods employees are earning less and have fewer benefits than others who work at comparable facilities in our area. We believe that the employees at O'Connor Woods should be given every opportunity to provide quality care to residents, including some who are our friends and family members. This means ensuring employees are able to earn a living wage, have medical insurance and retire in dignity.

It is unacceptable to us that the management at O'Connor Woods are spending thousands of dollars to fight the union, rather than investing that same money in quality care. Pope Benedict XVI, in a recent Encyclical Letter, expressed concern that trade union organizations are meeting with more resistance than in the past, and said: "The repeated calls issued within the Church's social doctrine, beginning with Rerum Novarum [60], for the promotion of workers' associations that can defend their rights must therefore be honoured today even more than in the past, as a prompt and far-sighted response to the urgent need for new forms of cooperation at the international level, as well as the local level."

In conclusion, we respectfully ask you to urge the management of O'Connor Woods to settle a fair union contract with their employees as soon as possible.
