The short explanation of this alert was:

For nearly 10 years, rich and powerful national lenders have had a lockjaw on the state legislature by filling the coffers of key lawmakers. But those lawmakers aren't in charge anymore.

Now, Speaker of the House Jeff Merkley has proposed House Bill 2871, which will limit all interest rates from payday loan, car title, and all consumer loans to 36 percent. This will prevent the lenders from taking advantage of loopholes in our current law and make all loans more fair and more affordable.

TODAY marks the first step. The Consumer Protection Committee of the Oregon House of Representatives will be holding a hearing on House Bill 2871 at 1:00 pm. We will be there along with consumers, faith leaders, and advocates who have been fighting for this bill for nearly a decade.

But the predatory lenders have targeted Oregon for a massive public realtion - misinformation campaign.

We must fight back. Please show your support by signing this petition to lawmakers today.
